Let's Chat About Science Communication for Children

Children are immersed in science topics from a very young age. They are curious and enjoy experimenting and testing hypotheses, just like scientists. So, it's fair to say that children are an important audience for science communications initiatives! In this member meet up, we will chat about why and how to do science communication for children, what are the main differences between formal and informal education, and how they can support each other. We will discuss the importance of knowing our audiences and actually engaging them in the science communication process, that is, giving them a protagonist role throughout the learning journey.

Date: Wednesday, May 14 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET via Zoom

    Cost: Free to all members

Hosted by: Catarina Chagas, SWCC Board Member

Catarina Chagas is a science journalist and communications professional with ~18 years of experience in writing and editing stories, books, and developing content for videos, social media, museum exhibitions, mobile apps, outreach events and beyond, helping bridge gaps between science and a variety of audiences, including children and teenagers. She has participated in research projects in science communication, which helped her reflect on her practices in science journalism and outreach and deepened her understanding of why and how to communicate science.

    Three Conference Streams

    Stream 1: Connected Practices

With the growing importance and valuing of knowledge transfer and knowledge mobilization, researchers’ and science journalists and communicators’ goals and activities have an opportunity to grow together in a mutually supportive and beneficial way.

What can we learn from each other? How can we work together to increase the knowledge and understanding of science outside of the academy? How do we negotiate the respective needs, goals and obligations of our respective fields of practice?

    Stream 2: Connecting People

How do we best connect with researchers and scientists? How do we best reach our audiences? How do we bring people together to facilitate the exchange of knowledge?

Stream 3: New Ways of Connecting

Emerging and established digital technologies create new possibilities for science communications. How can we best use these tools to connect – with each other as a professional community, with audiences, with other stories?
