January Member Meet Up

Delivering Sci Comm to Younger Audiences

Monday January 23, 2022, from 12-1pm EST

While many of us work to communicate challenging science topics to adults, how do we change our approach when communicating with children and youth?  What are the challenges of communicating important information to audiences who might not have the education or experiences to understand?  And how do we encourage children and youth to be discerning in choosing where they get their information?

Join us for our on Monday January 23rd from 12 pm to 1 pm EST via zoom for a discussion on what we can and are doing to reach children and youth in a time when misinformation is widespread and the need for accurate and validated scientific advice is critical! This member meet up will be led by SWCC Director Vanessa Nelson Vice President, External Relations at Let's Talk Science and Nick Butt an Outreach Coordinator with Let's Talk Science.

Nick Butt manages the national virtual outreach program STEM Club. STEM Club launched in March 2021 to support educators’ shift to virtual learning during the pandemic and has achieved over 370,000 student interactions by bringing hands-on STEM activities to Grade 4-6 students across Canada.

Nick is passionate about the art and science of STEM communication. He has a background in physics and educational research and has worked with organizations such as Telus Spark, Science Slam, and Perimeter Institute to bring unique SciComm experiences to audiences of all ages.
