Communicating clearly with your audience is the first step in building trust and authentic engagement. This session will cover evidence-informed plain language principles you can start applying right away to help you express your ideas clearly and succinctly so that your message will be easy for your audience to understand. You'll get an opportunity to practice these principles with hands-on exercises using real-world examples. 

By the end of this session, you will be able to: 

  • Define plain language
  • Explain how plain language relates to accessibility and equity
  • Identify problems that can make a communication confusing or frustrating
  • Apply common plain language techniques to make a communication easier to understand

Speaker Bio:

Iva Cheung is a Certified Professional Editor, plain language trainer, publishing consultant, and health policy researcher. She holds a Master of Publishing degree and a PhD in health science, and she has worked with historically silenced groups to co-create accessible health information. She teaches the Plain Language in Health Literacy course for SFU Continuing Studies' Plain Language Certificate program and sits on the Plain Language Technical Committee for Accessibility Standards Canada.
