MISSION AND VISION

SWCC Mission

We are a community of science writers, science journalists, and science communicators.

We offer professional development and networking opportunities to further science communication and journalism best practices across multiple media platforms.

Our members disseminate credible and accurate information on scientific topics through various media including social media, written articles, and other multimedia tools.

Our purpose is twofold:

  • Serve our members: To build a network among science communicators across Canada, to generate interest in the production of science communication.
  • Serve the public: To empower the public to make informed decisions, to boost overall interest and trust in science, to generate an awareness around the importance of good science communication.

SWCC Vision

Our vision is to be the most valuable and inclusive organization for science communicators in Canada, giving our members the tools and skills they need to improve scientific understanding and critical thinking.

value Statement

Science Writers and Communicators of Canada is a community of and for science writers, science journalists and science communicators that offers professional development and networking opportunities to further science communication and journalism best practices across multiple media platforms.

Our members disseminate credible and accurate information on scientific topics through mediums including social media, written articles, video and other multimedia tools.

SWCC’s work matters because it supports and promotes clearly articulated, evidence-based information in an era of eroding trust in authority and misunderstanding of the scientific process.

SWCC Values

  • Building science capital. SWCC contributes to a world where people understand and recognize the role that science can play in decision making and that it has a positive impact on our quality of life. We support critical thinking and good decision making in the face of challenging topics.
  • Inclusion. The SWCC provides a safe and respectful environment for its members and supports equity, diversity and inclusion in its activities, public events, and online media.
  • Mentorship. We value providing support to our members, ensuring that early career science writers and communicators can develop skills and opportunities, with the long term goal of improving the state of the profession in Canada.
  • Community-building. We value our role as a professional community for our members, who may be the only science communicators in their organizations, and who need a community of peers.
  • Accountability. We value accountable communications with a particular commitment to scientific accuracy, clarity and factual integrity. We recognize the fundamental role that transparency in science coverage plays in limiting the spread of misinformation and are committed to helping our members produce rigorous content.
