This professional development event will feature a presentation and Q&A with Marty Kurylowicz, host of the podcast "The Science in The Fiction". This podcast is both a science and science fiction podcast whose goal is to dig deep into the biggest ideas in science fiction. The hosts use science to elevate the conversation about science fiction, and science fiction to promote science education, curiosity and vision among the general public.
Marty will describe how he combines interviews with science fiction authors and scientists to discuss scientific topics that appear in science fiction, such as black holes, geoengineering, extra dimensions, exobiology, planetary science etc. By framing scientific topics in a fictional context that stretches real science into creative 'future science', the audience is challenged to imagine the future directions and consequences of contemporary technologies and our current understanding of the universe.
Dr. Marty Kurylowicz is a multi-disciplinary scientist with a background in physics and biochemistry whose career spans research, R&D management, business development and sales. He completed his BSc and MSc in physics at the University of British Columbia, his PhD in computational biochemistry at the University of Toronto, and three post-doctoral fellowships in experimental biophysics at the University of Guelph, McMaster University and the University of Toronto. He then joined Mirexus Biotechnologies, an early-stage startup where he worked to commercialize a new bio-nano-material for applications in the skin care, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical sectors. Moving to ScopeSys - another early stage startup - he helped commercialize a nanotechnology platform for imaging single-molecule interactions. Currently he is a Sales Associate at Gamble Technologies Ltd, a Canadian distributor of scientific instruments in the spectroscopy, electrochemistry and nuclear sectors. On the side, he uses nanoparticles to 'paint' microscopic landscapes, creates biomolecular sculptures using gemstones, and hosts a podcast called The Science in The Fiction.
