It is well know that the blooms of freshwater Cyanobacteria have frequently resulted in a deterioration of water quality, with adverse effects on lake ecology, livestock, human water supply and recreational amenity. The most direct form of control involves the application of algaecide, but this is expensive and potentially damaging to the environment. Even where chemical treatments have no immediate damaging effects on lakes there is the risk of accumulation of harmful concentration in the bottom sediments. An alternative approach for the direct elimination of nuisance algae involves using cyanophages agents. The existence of cyanophages have reported for the last 50 years that preyed on prokaryotic Cyanobacteria causing bloom yet viruses still has to be accurately evaluated and overall, viral infection seems to affect a few abundant susceptible phylotypes, whereas others could be resistant in contrast to the concept of ‘phages kill the winner’. In this regards I would like to deliver to the floor a very important and potential factors that are responsible for increasing the Canobacterial harmful algae blooms (CyanoHABs) in Canada and in various parts of the globe with relation of cyanophage interaction and mechanisms in aquatic ecosystems.

I believe we need to make awareness on this very important subject to preserve our water and earth.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Dr. Sabah A A Jassim

I agree with Dr. Goldman about the liberation treatment. Here in Saskatchewan, our provincial government is pouring big bucks into trials, while at the same time, poverty levels in our "booming" province remain high. We know poverty is a health determinant, and we also know poor people are less likely to vote. Cynical, I know, but true. All the more reason for diligent journalism on this question.
